JSDD’s spiritual home environment is emphasized each Friday as the residents come together to welcome the Sabbath. It is a way to socialize in a Jewish context via Zoom meetings led by Hagit Oren, Judaic Coordinator.
The ritual Sabbath candle lighting, reciting the Kiddush (blessing over wine) and HaMotzi (pray over challah) are comforting traditions. This week, Hagit took everyone on a virtual tour of the most populous city in Israel, Tel Aviv. She highlighted the Old Jaffa Port section of Tel Aviv – home to restaurants, shops, artists quarters, and galleries. Many of the residents were inspired by the tour and expressed an interest in traveling to Israel. In fact, pre-COVID, a trip to Israel was in the works for some of our residents. Planning will resume, once again, when travel is possible.
Hagit shared her recipe for making a classic delicious Israeli salad using fresh vegetables that are chopped into small pieces and tossed with lemon juice and olive oil. This is a bright, colorful salad full of flavor.
Hagit brought Shabbat to its conclusion by reciting the MiSheberach, a healing prayer for the sick. These interactive weekly observances allow everyone the opportunity to participate as a valued member of the JSDD community.
