As previously announced, part of today’s final hour was devoted to a traditional Wae Center farewell circle for RaQuasha of our staff. This occasion drew a large assembly of both students and staff, many of whom came to the microphone to share their parting words.
Among those who spoke today were Yvette, Jarad, Kristen, Victoria M., Roberto, Jay, Teresa, Tamilah, Grace, Janet, Debbie, Ryan, David G., Erin, Mariam, Marquise, and Maria. Yvette presented RaQuasha with two gifts and a card signed by many of the students whom she helped to achieve their goals.
Some were overcome with emotion as they spoke. Because most of RaQuasha’s hours were assigned to the workability site, those of us who did not go there regularly were not aware how great an impact she had on many of our members. She will be greatly missed!
Following RaQuasha’s circle, there was not much time remaining, but several members had spoken to me about singing a special song in her honor. Victoria, for example, chose the Sister Sledge classic, “We Are Family.” Ryan selected “We’re all in this Together” from High School Musical. The insistent rhythm of these songs prompted more than one listener to jump up and dance. Before long, the dance floor became very crowded.
At one point in the proceedings, I counted thirty members in the main room, easily one of the largest turnouts we’ve seen so far this year.
